BOND DDG - International Day of Disabled Persons 2007
September 2007

Disability is a development issue

To coincide with 2007 International Day of Disabled Persons, on December 3rd, the BOND Disability and Development Group held an awareness raising event at Central Hall in Westminster.

The event was attended by Chief Executives and senior management staff of organisations involved in international development.  The aim was to increase awareness within the wider development field of the necessity to include disabled people in all development work, offer practical ways to think about meaningful inclusion and provide a network of organisations committed to progress in this sector.

Chaired by Susan Daniels (CEO, Deaf Child Worldwide), the event began with speeches by Malcolm Bruce MP, Isaac Kute (former CEO Action on Disability and Development), Charles Badenoch (CEO, World Vision) and Graham Teskey from DFID.

Lorraine Wapling (BOND DDG Chair)  led a "taster" particpatory disability awareness workshop during which, participants were encouraged to look at how they include disabled people in their work.

There will be a follow up event in 2008.
